Um. Bobby Beausoleil was not a part of the Tate murders. It was Tex Watson who said “I am the devil…”. Beausoleil was in jail at the time of the murders for the Hinman murder, and the Family said the Tate and LaBianca murders were actually to try and get Bobby BeauSoleil out by making them look like the Hinman murder– to make it look like Hinman’s killer was still at large and not Bobby.
You’re confusing Bobby with Charles “Tex” Watson.

Re: Myth #2. Becoming a “member” of the CoS simply required a $100 payment (at least that was the cost back then). LaVey actually commented that sending in money and getting a membership card does not automatically make one a Satanist, at least by his standards. I doubt there were any quality control measures in place, such as background checks or such. Since there was virtually no interaction or activity between the church and its standard members, it really didn’t matter.
